A NICU Mom
Every girl dreams about having a family of her own. I imagined a perfect life, getting married, and having beautiful kids.
Life doesn't always work out as we had planned.
In case you don't know what a NICU is, it stands for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In short, it's a place for premature babies.
I know sounds scary, and yeah, it is.
I was 20 years old, and was about to go to the Army when I found out I was pregnant with twins. My boyfriend and I were so happy about our new baby. I decided not to go into the Army, and start raising our family.
Two months later we got into a car accident.
I was rushed to the ER, where I would spend the next two weeks. The heart rate of one of my twins started dropping, eventually stopped, and we lost it.
We were devastated, but we had to stay strong for the other twin. It was getting complicated, and I ended up having an emergency C-section at 26 weeks.
My baby girl was 12 inches long and weighed only 1 pound and 8 oz. She went straight into the NICU as she was unable to breathe on her own.
We have now been in the NICU for almost 3 months. My baby is connected to an artificial breathing machine. I feel helpless, but being in the NICU is keeping her alive.
I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me or for my baby.
Here is my message: Miracles happen. If you are a NICU mom, don't give up, you and your baby are survivors. Your story needs to be heard.
